The Opposite of Humor

Or, "Snark for Snark's Sake"

I've discovered the opposite of humor and it is Newsweek. And Jay Leno. Newsweek and Jay Leno epitomize this pop culture referencin', we-all-know-what-jerks-they-are, it's funny 'cause it's cruel kind of humor that is just...not...funny.

Here's a recent Newsweek headline on Julia Roberts' appearance on Broadway: "It Sure Beats Mona Lisa Smile 2". Check out the article. No mention of the movie, no relevance. "Remember that Julia Roberts movie that sucked? Ha ha!" Basically, it's a cheap shot. The mass media equivalent of pulling on Julia's pigtails and then pointing a laughing.

This pretty much all there is to Leno's humor, and Newsweek is chock full of these. I'd offer more, but I'm late for a meeting. With a jerk. Ha ha!

How is it that Jay Leno has survived as a talk show host? He is just, plain not funny. Are we truly that white-bread a society that this is what we must be subjected too?

And the depressing thing, is that at one point he was edgy and entertaining. Maybe it's just a part of your soul that you give away when you work for "the light bulb boys at GE".

His man on the street routines interviewing people, just come across as smarmy - look at how dumb these people in LA are. In contrast, when Letterman does his in studio games with audience members, it comes accross as laughing with them, not at them. Letterman also gets points for tearing Bill O'Reilly a new orifice back in January. Might have been one of my favorite network TV moments of the new century.

I agree ... I can watch Leno for a good 20 minutes without cracking a smile. His jokes are either mean, obvious or stupid.
